Diabetes is the most common disease leading from childhood obesity. Diabetes attacks the blood sugar level in the body. The blood sugar in the body is called glucose. Glucose makes up the body's muscle, tissue, and is your brain's main source of energy. Diabetes is when people have too much glucose in your blood stream. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is when the body produces almost no insulin in the body due to an overactive immune system. This type mostly occurs in young children and middle age adults. Only way to help type 1 is to take insulin every day. This is the start for obese children that don’t do anything about diabetes when diagnosed with it. Type two diabetes makes insulin, but it does not let your body properly use it. This type is the most common among all people. About 90 - 95 percent of people that have diabetes have this type. This is most common in older people, but could also be young adults. The main way to control type two diabetes is all in what a person eats. I know many people who have diabetes. Many of them started off at a young age with diabetes. I hope that one day there will be a better cure to diabetes. So that many people don’t have to change their whole lifestyle and food intake. People need to look for certain signs and symptoms. Many people wonder how they can tell if their child is overweight because all kids grow and different. The main way to tell if your child is overweight is measured the BMI (Body Mass Index). Body mass index is measured by calculating your weight and height.
The BMI calculates to a percentage. 84th percentile is a very healthy weight to be at. 94th percentile is considered overweight. Anything over 95 is obese. These percents are calculated for teens, Adults and small childrens score might be a little different. When people start to notice or think that a child they know is become overweight, people need to start doing something about it before it is too late. There are too many cases in this world that children have been overweight for just too long and then it lead to more life threatening diseases. Being overweight as a child is just starting life off bad and it will only get worse when becoming an adult unless people change something Finding BMI score is not hard and it only takes a few minutes in a doctor's office. I feel that many people just don’t know about it or they are just too lazy to help their self or children out. I believe that everybody should get their BMI calculated even if you know you are not overweight. Both kids were ready to become young and healthy kids again after being obese their whole life. The first steps for both of the kids was finding what their body mass index (BMI) was. Both of them had very high BMI readings, but they were not high enough to be considered morbidly obese, which is the worst of the worst. Both of the kid’s doctors knew that something needed to change very fast because the kids are at a very high risk for many diseases if they stay the way they are.
The doctors tried to think of something simple for both of these kids because they barely know how to read and write and it would be very hard to teach them how to watch what they eat and do. So the doctor came up with a solution that was called Green light, Yellow light, and Red light. Green light meant they could eat foods that were good and healthy for them, yellow light meant that they could have foods that were ok for them and they could only have them once and awhile, and red meant stay away from the bad foods. The plan made by the doctor really helped the kids and their families. It made the families eat healthier and made their grocery shopping more fun because the kids had a part in picking and choosing what to put in the cart. The families really noticed that their children's lifestyle was becoming more healthy. The kids started to lose some weight just by changing what they put into their mouths. The doctors liked what they saw and said that they are happy to see that simple things are changing their lifestyles. This plan created by the doctors sounds like a really good idea. I like how they make it more fun for the kids by including them in on the grocery shopping and being able to relate this plan to fun games that they play. I believe that adults could really benefit from this too, and it’s not just meant for kids. Samantha Stevens is a four year old girl that weighs 54 pounds. Samantha is the biggest student in her pre-kindergarten class. Her parents made a statement that all she does is snack, eat, and nibble. She can’t just have one of anything, she has to have three or more. She is just never content with just one serving.
Samatha’s mother says that she is a carbohydrate addict. Samantha loves any type of noodles, bread, or fast food. Samatha’s mother tries to say no and stop her from eating everything, but she eventually caves in and gives her what she want. Samatha’s mother knows that her child needs help so she looked out for help. Samantha began a program on Long Island run by Dolgoff. This was a six month plan to help her get healthier. The next child is Nicholas Reeves. Nicholas is a eight year old boy in second grade that weight 117 pounds. Nicholas’ mother doesn't know what to say to him because he is always hungry even after they eat. Nicholas's mother knew he needed some help so she took him to a clinic at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Both children have started to change their diets after they have meet with the professionals. These stories are very interesting. It is a different point of view hearing from personal stories and not just reading and learning about facts. I feel that people learn more about topics when they hear personal stories. I believe that these children's parents did the right thing by looking out for help for their children. Many people don’t realize what can happen after being obese their whole life or even just a part of it. There is a whole list a diseases that are caused by obesity. Many of these diseases can be life threatening and they would have to change their lifestyle around them. Not only diseases can be life threatening, but those things could lead to mental disease as well. Diabetes is a big disease that plays a large role in obesity. The diabetes statistics show that diabetes has increased 70 percent since 1995. Diabetes and Obesity go hand and hand. Just because somebody had diabetes does not mean that they are obese. Another disease is Respiratory disease. Respiratory disease (aka sleep apnea) makes the body work harder to breath and could lead to not breathing at all. Can obesity lead to depression? Statistics prove that depression and obesity have no connection but they go hand and hand. If a person is obese, they often start to feel depressed. When somebody is obese and feel depressed, it could lead to suicide or any other type of self harm. Obesity does not lead to depression but depression can lead to obesity. Many people that are depressed often start to lose self confidence and think less of their self. I believe that many people are uninformed about obesity and what harm it can do to your body. Being obese is just a overall bad thing for somebodies life. It can cause people to self harm and takes years out of their body. People just need to be more informed and do something about obesity. There is a project called the Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration Project also know as (CORD). The CORD is a business relationship between the Harvard University and Massachusetts children’s hospitals. The CORD project studies children between two through twelve year olds. By doing research on these children they hope to stop all disease issues and obesity problem within these children. What is the CORD program doing to help stop child obesity? The CORD group has received funding from the Affordable Care Act to do research on obese children. In 2011 the CORD group gatherer four children with obesity problems and with the money from the Affordable Care Act the studied the child's day to day life. The project focused mainly on what the child ate, where they lived, and what type of activities did the child do. They thought that these three things would be the main role the child's life. After studying the children for some time, they came up with the main things the child needs to do to stay healthy and fit. The children need to increase their physical activity and eat more fruits, vegetables, and drink healthier beverages. They found the children do not get enough sleep so the child needs to go to bed earlier and get more sleep. The child need to decrease the time spent looking at a screen time and they need to drink less sugary drinks and energy-dense foods and drink more water. All of these things should help children stay for fit and in shape and take the rates of child obesity down. I like to see that there are many projects out trying to help and stop child obesity. Child obesity is a big problem and everybody needs to realize this. I think that it is great that companies are donating money toward projects are and trying to find a way to stop child obesity. I think that this project was a great thing, but they need to get kids to do the things that they suggest. Many doctors and researchers ask questions about this topic. According to a poll 69 percent of doctors around the world believe that child obesity is the parents fault. The other 31 percent think and the parents are not responsible for the child's weight problem and it is the kids fault. Doctors day that the parents control where their child eat and what they eat, so that means it's their fault.
How much money and what kid of problems in this child obesity causing? A doctor that studies child obesity say that the United States alone spends 100 billion dollars dealing with child obesity. If the parents would just control what their kids eat the United State would have more money and kids would be much more healthier. Children don't realize the amount of life they are taking out of their life span by being over weight for a long time. How big of a problem is Child Obesity in the United States? Studies tell that ever one in six children suffer obesity. By looking at the statistics, this is becoming one of the biggest problems in the United States. Compared from the early 1980's, there are twice as many over weight children today and 3 times as many adults. Children need to be watching their weight and doing something about it soon or they won't be outliving their parents. I agree with many parts of this article. I agree that parent are a big role in the child's life. The parent is suppose to be the one that teaches them and will prepare them for life ahead. Many companies are starting to realize that child obesity is becoming a bigger problem everyday. Companies are reaching out to App creators and are giving them ideas and money to create apps that get kids outside and moving around. Many people started doing research to find way to get kids more active and what would inspire them to get outside and playing around. Researchers realized that kids are always on some type of electronic device and if they could incorporate something into their phones or iPads it would be great.
These apps are great ideas many thought because many kids just sit and play games but not they can be active and still play their favorite games. The NFL is a big part of these programs. The NFL has the game NFL Play 60. This game gets kids out and running for coins and treasures. The NFL's game has been proven to work! Another game is Eat & Move-O-Matic. This app teaches kids how to watch and burn their calories off that they have just eaten. This gives the kids ideas and different games that the kids can participate in. Another game is Treasure Dash – Race for Lost Wonders. This game makes kids stand up and jump and run around. The fast and harder they work the more points they will get. With this game there is also a multiplayer button so the kids could play with their friend and get more of a group workout and it would be way more fun. I think that all of these games are great ideas. By getting kids out and moving around is a great way to prevent child obesity. The more ways people can get kids out and moving the less of a chance for obese children. I think that there are many great ideas out there, its just kids should start doing these types of games instead of the ones where they just sit.
